New! I've just noticed the Norton aka Symantec is now offering an online backup service. A very reliable and trusted company whos core focus in on security seems like a good option. I will research the Norton Online Backup service and post a review here as soon as possible. Like the other online backup services, the Norton Online Backup is automatic and seems very user friendly. Hopefully it's easy enough that you can use it without having to worry about setting up a backup on a regular basis. Automatic online backup is what we all want! So until I get a review up, check out the Norton Online Backup website here. Some great tutorials and testimonials!

June 11, 2010 - I've been doing some more research on the best online backup but I still haven't plunged. Right now I'm leaning towards Mozy. I missed their discount code from last month which was a huge savings. I will see what they have for June. The biggest issue that I have with online backup is the speed and upload limits that they set. I'm sure you are like most people with a big hard drive. You want to back up all that information online but you don't want to be doing it for the next 6 months for 24 hours a day. Honestly, depending on your upload speed, you could literally take 7 months backing up your computer online with some of the online backup services that are out there. So, wait for my next update and I will summarize and rationalize my final decision thus far in the process.

March 22, 2010 - I've now started my research in the best online backup. Trust me because:

a - I'm going to be using the online back service that is the best.

b - I'm doing this in 2010 so my research is up to date.

So there is my minor rant. I'm sincere in what I'm posting here. I'm doing this website for your benefit and mine. I will learn lots about the different options out there and what will be best for me, and likely for you also.

So far I've live chatted with Carbonite and Mozy. So far Mozy is taking the lead on a couple issues. It's something I had not considered before and that is...upload speed. Think about this for a moment. Actually get active and check your hard disk usage right now. How many gigabites are you looking at backing up? Next thing to consider is how long you want to wait for your computer to backup on that initial phase. A quick calculation of my computer? Get ready for this. Are you sitting down? It would take 166 days if I was uploading 24 hours a day to backup my 500GB of data. Is this crazy? Yes it is crazy. Sure I can likely clean out about 100GB right now, but it still leaves about 400GB to backup. Let's face it, a lot of people are like me with that many photos etc. Perhaps you aren't using a lot of disk space and the issue I will discuss is much less of a deal breaker for you.

(check back...the story continues)

The reason I launched this website is pretty simple. I, like you, realized how important backing up my data has become. The thought of losing gigabites of information and settings is just a nightmare that I don't want see as a reality. Just this past week, my 1 TB hard drive stopping working. It's just over a year old! I don't even know what I can recover from that drive at this point. It was not my main drive, which makes it even more troubling. It was only used for my photos and videos. It didn't get a lot of use, but it has stopped working!

online backup services

This drive failure has forced me into finding the best online backup services. It's opened my eyes to the importance of data backup. And as we all know, data backup is not fun. The less work it is, the more likely we are to do it on a regular basis. The key importance to an online backup service is that your data is secure and stored in a secure location. Most times I think backing up on blank dvds is doing the job but where do I put those backups? In my house! Having backups on site means you have the opportunity for theft. Yes your lovely backup you thought you had can easily walk away.

You likely have similar reasons to me for using online backup services. It's incredible just how much of our lives are contained on our computers. Hard drive failure is one issue, but have you considered the thought of a theft? That's another way that your hard drive and information can be lost. I certainly think about the possibility of my PC being stolen and how that might feel. I'm lucky to have an extremely heavy tower and it's less likely to be packed out of my house. The fact is, it could be stolen from my home.

If you're like me, you want the easiest online data backup possible. There are options for relatively cheap online storage, but the process of backing up your files and having to pick which files to backup is a hassle. The best news is that most online backup services make the process absolutely simple. Another important criteria is how easy it is to use the backup service to actual recover your computer. Wouldn't a click of a button be nice to bring your computer back to where it was before you lost your data?

So let's go through the search together. I'm at the starting point in looking for the best online backup services. I will list details and options available for the various online data backup storage companies out there. If there are deals or coupons I will keep the site updated with discount offerings. From what I've seen so far, there seems to be a lot of competition among the companies. That means better chances of getting discounts!

I'm sure we will have the same criteria for determining the best online backup services. Security is probably the top priority for all of us. Second may be cost per month. Third would be how easy it is to use. Essentially easy to use means that your computer can be setup to backup on a regular or daily basis at a time of your choosing. Flexibility is key. Backup your data online during the night! Another important aspect of online backup services is that in the event of your losing a hard drive, how easy would a complete reinstall be.
